Today, bragging rights were up for grabs as we welcomed local neighbours Penycae to the Rock in the WNL Premier Divisions big local derby of the day.

Having lost our last two league fixtures we were looking for a big response from the lads against an unpredictable Penycae outfit who recently defeated the then league leader Brickfield Rangers. In the early exchanges there wasn’t much to choose between the two sides as they both battled for the supremacy. Cefn had the better early chances but Penycae always looked like they could cause one or two problems for the Albion defence so the backline had to remain mindful. It took at least 20 minutes for the game’s first goal which was scored by new signing and former ex Penycae player Jimmy Jones. It was Jones himself who was fouled 25 yards out and from the resulting free kick the Albion’s top goal scorer made no mistake rifling into the top corner. A fantastic goal form Jim! One nil to the good the confidence started to grow and the Cefners began to take control of the game. Soon after the opener another former Penycae player and new summer signing Conner Kendrick was to get in on the act putting Cefn 2-0 to the good. Areal poacher’s goal that Conner is renowned for, the Cefn front man is really starting to find his feet and goals are starting to come thick and fast for him of late. 2-0 HT

With nothing to lose and trailing 2-0 in the second half Penycae had a reshuffle throwing their centre half up top in an attempt to find a way back into the game. To be fair despite Cefn’s persistent dominance Penycae had a glorious opportunity to reduce the deficit but the excellent Josh Roberts pulled of a great save from point blank. A warning for the lads that they were not home and dry just yet! The next goal was important and thankfully it went Cefn’s way when Conner Kendrick gambled on a shot which was fumbled by the Penycae goalkeeper to which Kendrick poked home from close range. 3-0 to the Cefners. From this moment apart from one or two half chances from the visitors it was really about whether Cefn would add more to their tally. It was almost four when a surge from the half way line by saw Dan Cox send a thunder bolt which agonisingly crashed against the post, it would have been some goal. As full time approached it was the talented Kien Morris’ turn to go close when Albion who were defending a corner broke with real intent tuning defence into attack in a matter of seconds but Morris was unable to convert a one on one opportunity forcing a good save from the Penycae shot stopper.

A deserved victory against our local neighbours.

A big thank you to all the supporters who come to get behind the team today.
