Déjà vu - Bangor City vs Cefn Albion Welsh Cup Round Two

Its Saturday 5th November 1983 and Cefn Albion football club of the Wrexham area league are drawn away to Alliance Premier league outfit Bangor City in the second round of the Welsh Cup. A team including some well-known names such as the Davies brothers Alan and Peter, Brian Mackie Anthony Lockley, Peter Valentine (rab), Gavin Foulkes and many more travelled to Farrah Road hoping to cause a cup upset, they were backed by a huge vocal following who had travelled up from Cefn Mawr to support the team for the 15:00 kick off.

Although Saturday November 5th, 1983 will go down as one of the biggest days in the club’s history, underdogs Cefn Albion, only trailing 1-0 at the interval finally went down to a six-nil defeat with talented 19 year old youngster Foulkes coming closest, striking the City cross bar. Although the Albion were out played for large parts of the game, the group of players were praised in the match report for their attitude, brave display and commended on the fact that they never gave up against higher opposition.

Fast forward about 35 years to Saturday 10th November 2018 when Welsh National League Premier Division village club Cefn Albion travel to Welsh giants Bangor City of the Cymru Alliance in the second round of the Welsh cup, Sound Familiar? In similar circumstances the current Cefn Albion team head into the game as massive underdogs looking to cause an unlikely upset and will be backed by a travelling support of well over 150 people!

Two of them supporters will be brothers Alan and Peter Davies who both following the football club on a weekly basis supporting the team and their lads Paul Griffiths and Oliver Davies. The story is quite unique, as Alan and Peter, who were both involved all them years ago as players will be making the same trip but this time to Nantporth and as supporters, hoping that the team and their boys can achieve something special in the cup!

Great to have some images of the official programme that was was produced for the cup tie all those years ago, that very programme is older than every player that will be included into the match day squad on Saturday! A brilliant piece of history and fond memories for people to look back on! It's great to see that the village of Cefn Mawr still has the same togetherness, heart and commitment as it did all those years ago, you will never change the people from the Cefn!

A big thank you to the person (name coming soon) who shared the original programmes with our chairman Haydn Evans!
